Unveiling the Mystery of Ancient Petroglyphs in India: A Journey Through Time
India is a land of infinite secrets. With a rich tapestry of historical and archaeological marvels, our country is a treasure trove of hidden gems. Among these, the Petroglyphs are some of the most fascinating and least known.
These Petroglyphs are ancient carvings on rocks, made through various techniques such as carving, incising, and picking. They are primarily found around Ratnagiri, Rajapur, Lanja, and Sindhudurg in Maharashtra. Recent discoveries have revealed that these Petroglyphs are approximately 12,000 years old, dating back to 10,000 BC.
Discovering a Lost Ancient Civilization
The story begins in the late 1980s when Sudhir Risbud, a child living near Ratnagiri, cycled past a square-shaped rock carved with intricate patterns. Little did Sudhir know that this ordinary stone was a clue to a lost ancient civilization.
Over the next 25 years, Sudhir and his friends explored the Konkan landscape. It was not until Sudhir collaborated with a historian on these expeditions that the true significance of their discoveries was revealed. In 2010, Sudhir launched the program ‘Adgalnavarche Konkan – Unexplored Konkan' to systematically explore and connect such sites. By 2020, they had discovered nearly 52 sites, with more than 1,000 Petroglyphs.

Relevance to Global Petroglyphs
The Petroglyphs discovered in India share surprising similarities with those found around the world. This indicates a possible connection between different ancient cultures. The symbols and patterns found in the Indian Petroglyphs are remarkably similar to those found in Petroglyphs in North America, Europe, and other parts of Asia. This global distribution hints at a widespread cultural exchange or a shared spiritual and artistic heritage.
The findings of the Petroglyphs in India shed new light on the ancient civilizations and provide insight into the lives and beliefs of the people who created them. These Petroglyphs are not only a valuable historical record but also a source of inspiration for modern archaeologists and researchers.
A Prodigy of Indian Heritage
The discovery of these Petroglyphs has made Sudhir Risbud a proud Indian. He has dedicated his life to the exploration and preservation of these ancient sites. For him, these Petroglyphs are a reminder of the immense cultural heritage of India and the rich history it holds. They are not just ancient rocks but are symbolic of a civilization that is both lost and waiting to be rediscovered.
Through his relentless efforts, Sudhir has unearthed a treasure trove of ancient knowledge and artistic expression. These Petroglyphs are more than just carvings on rocks; they are keys to unlocking the mysteries of our past. As we continue to study and understand these Petroglyphs, we reconnect with the roots of our civilization and our place in the world.
