The Curse That Separated Radha and Krishna: A Delicate Balance Between Devotion and Duty

However, the question often arises: why did Radha separate from Krishna by the curse of Sridama, while Rukmini could stay with him despite the curse of Durvasas?

Understanding the Curse of Durvasa Muni on Rukmini

To understand the separation of Radha and Krishna, we must first explore the specific curse that Durvasa Muni gave to Rukmini.

According to the Skanda Purana Dwarka Mahatmya Chapter 2, verses 48–51, Durvasa Muni issued a stern warning to Rukmini. He said, "Rukmini, as you have taken water without seeking my permission, you will always remain occupied with the habit of drinking, and there will be no doubt about this." This curse came because Rukmini drank water from a container without removing the yoke from the chariot and without asking for permission from Durvasa Muni. Hence, it was decreed that she would bear separation from Krsna." (Skanda Purana Dwarka Mahatmya Chapter 2 Text 48–51)

After delivering his curse, Durvasa Muni got off the chariot and sat down on the ground, visibly angry. This sudden and harsh curse caused Rukmini to feel distressed and she began to cry, pleading with Krsna to stay with her.

Contrasting with Radha's Separation by Sridama's Curse

Considering the dramatic scenario presented, it is important to note that the scriptural accounts do not specify a particular time frame for Radha's separation. Unlike the explicit mention of Rukmini's curse, there is no specific period, such as 100 years, mentioned for Radha. Therefore, the separation of Radha and Krishna need not be interpreted as a long-term estrangement but could be a briefer duration—such as months or days.

Just as Rukmini's act of impropriety led to her separation, the stories suggest that Radha was subjected to a similar situation, albeit with a different form of curse.
