The Biblical Perspective on Destiny: Resurrection and Eternity
Will Some Be Raised to Heaven?
The Bible presents different destinies for different people. According to the scriptures, following Jesus' resurrection, not everyone will end up in heaven. This article will explore the biblical perspective on who will be raised to heaven, who will just die, and the conditions of life on earth after resurrection.
The Bible’s Answer: Destinies of Resurrection
Contrast the eight people who were resurrected earthside in the Bible with Jesus’ unique resurrection. According to 1 Peter 3:21-22, Jesus went to heaven, unlike the others who rose to continue life on earth. Jesus assured his disciples that he would come back to take them to heaven, as mentioned in John 14:3. This statement implies that only Jesus, at the time, was expected to be the first to be resurrected to heaven.
Resurrection to Heaven and Position
Later in Revelation, it is stated that 144,000 will be resurrected to heaven (Revelation 14:1-3). However, for those who follow Jesus, the scriptures indicate a more active role after resurrection, serving as king-priests with Christ (Revelation 20:6).
Who Will Be Resurrected Later?
Based on Paul's words in Acts 24:15, there will be a resurrection of the righteous and the unrighteous. The righteous refer to those who follow God's principles and have faith in Him, such as Daniel who was assured that he would awake in the end (Daniel 12:13). According to Psalm 37:29 and Matthew 5:5, God promises that the righteous will have eternal life on earth.
The Unrighteous and the Opportunity for Eternity
The unrighteous, which includes the billions who lived without understanding and applying Bible truth, will also be resurrected. After their resurrection, they will have the opportunity to know and appreciate Jehovah and Jesus (John 17:3). Those who choose to serve God will live forever.
Conditions on Earth After Resurrection
Revelation 21:4 describes how God will wipe away every tear and there will be no more mourning, outcry, or pain. Isaiah 65:21 further illustrates the joy and fulfillment that will accompany their new life: 'They will build houses and live in them; they will plant vineyards and eat their fruit.'
Upon resurrection, the earth will witness a new era of peace, joy, and prosperity. Think about what it would be like to live in such conditions with your resurrected loved ones.
Understanding these biblical promises can provide a framework for hope and faith, guiding believers in their current lives.
