Was J.R.R. Tolkien Nice to Be Around?

Though I never met J.R.R. Tolkien, I suspect he was a bit like Bilbo Baggins, full of whimsy and kindness yet with moments of sternness. It's bizarre that someone I have never met nor will ever meet has such a profound influence on my life. Still, round the corner there may wait a new road or a secret gate – in this case, the road to understanding Tolkien's personality.

Not a Lone Wanderer

Many know that Tolkien was not a loner. He married Edith Bratt and had four children. He even wrote his literature for his children, a testament to his deep love and desire to share his world with them. I did not know him, though, as I was a small child when he died. Yet, there are biographies and possibly an autobiography out there that could shed light on him.

A Bit Crusty and Grumpy?

I believe Tolkien could be a bit of a crusty old guy who got grumpy from time to time, particularly with nonsense. However, if you could look past his grumpiness, you would find an intelligent and fascinating man. His attention to detail, particularly in his countless writings, was obsessive, manifesting in his OCD-like focus on minutiae. He wrote thousands of pages, and while people might find a few inconsistencies, his dedication to his craft was commendable.

Imagination and Intelligence

Had I had the opportunity to meet Tolkien, I would have loved to learn more about his imagination and intelligence. Being around someone with such an enriched mind would have been extremely interesting. The way he crafted intricate tales and languages is astounding, and it's easy to imagine the wonder he must have brought to life when he told stories, even small ones. His writings are so well-crafted that his tales still captivate readers today.

Tolkien's influence extends far beyond his works. His personality and the way he conducted himself undoubtedly impacted those around him. While he may have had his quirks and grumpy moments, his intelligence and creativity cannot be denied. Whether you admire his work or are curious about the man behind the stories, understanding Tolkien's personality provides a deeper appreciation for his legacy.
