Unveiling Your Core Values: The Path to a Fulfilling Life

Discovering your core values is a journey that can profoundly transform your life. Understanding what truly matters to you can help you align your daily actions and choices with your deepest beliefs and desires. By living in accordance with these values, you can experience a sense of fulfillment that is sustaining and meaningful.

The Science of Core Values

To truly understand your core values, it's essential to delve into the first-of-its-kind scientific tool designed to facilitate this process. Check out the Core Values Assessment Tool. This tool is designed to help individuals identify the values that are most important to them and guide them in aligning their life with these values.

Discovering Your Core Values: A Practical Exercise

Exercise: How to Discover Your Core Values

Here is a practical exercise to help you uncover your core values:

Step 1: Questions Losing Track of Time When was the last time you were so absorbed in what you were doing you lost track of time? …in the last 3 months …in the last 6 months …over the last year Under each answer in 1-2 lines leave 1 of the three blank: what were you focused on in each experience Identity When was the last time you felt most like yourself? Consider different activities and events, hobbies, work, how you spend your free time. …in the last 3 months …in the last 6 months …over the last year Under each answer in 1-2 lines leave 1 of the three blank: what did you love about or identify with in these experiences Connection to Others When did you last feel really connected to another person? …in the last 3 months …in the last 6 months …over the last year Under each answer in 1-2 lines leave 1 of the three blank: what about these experiences made you feel connected

Step 2: Find Patterns. For each of your answers in a different colored pen, write down a word or phrase that sums up what it meant to you on the last blank line. Use the provided core values list for reference, or combine and simplify similar values.

Application of Core Values

Once you have identified your core values, focus on the top three that truly resonate with you. Make them actionable by creating a list of specific actions that align with these values. For example, if your top values are authenticity, empathy, and creativity:

Authenticity: Write openly in your blog, open up to friends even when it’s challenging. Empathy: Be there for those you are close to, use your writing to help others, offer ideas and experiences they can relate to. Creative Expression: Engage in writing fiction, visual arts like drawing and painting.

Integrating Core Values into Daily Life

To make these actions more present in your life, look for small ways to incorporate them regularly. Consistency is key. For instance, if creative expression is one of your core values, set aside time each week to work on a creative project, whether it’s writing, painting, or even doodling.

Reflecting on how these values impact your life can provide insights into whether you are living a life that truly fulfills you. It can be as simple as noticing how much joy and purpose you gain from your actions or as profound as recognizing when your actions are out of alignment with your values.

The fulfillment you seek is not found through external achievements or societal expectations. It is found within when you live authentically, connect deeply with others, and engage meaningfully with the world around you.
