Unsafe Society: The Plight of Vulnerability and Personal Security
Unsafe Society: The Plight of Vulnerability and Personal Security
Today's society undoubtedly faces a growing challenge in ensuring personal safety and security. The frequency and audacity of incidents reported in various regions highlight the need for stringent laws and timely interventions. This article delves into personal experiences and broader societal issues to underscore the urgency of addressing these critical concerns.
A Personal Experience: Daylight Threats
One instance that stands out prominently is my own experience. On a regular day, I was purchasing milk from a nearby store using a zebra crossing. As I walked home, a man followed me from the store all the way to my apartment. Despite being unaware of his presence, he eventually knocked on my door at 7 a.m. It turned out he was intoxicated and, after being sternly reprimanded, he left quickly. This incident taught me the importance of increased awareness in these scenarios. I promptly reported it to the police, an action that, unfortunately, became routine for me.
Escalating Fear: Late-Night Incidents
Months later, another disturbing experience occurred. At around 8 p.m., I went to collect groceries, and yet again, an older man followed me. He even went up to the apartment above mine to avoid being caught, leaving a newspaper on the door. This series of events underscored the escalation of such incidents, creating a pervasive atmosphere of fear and vulnerability.
Current Living Conditions: Gurugram, India
Currently, I live in Gurugram for work, and my daily commute involves a distance of 4 to 5 kilometers to and from my rented apartment. Usually, I rely on auto rickshaws for transportation. However, during the rainy season, traffic congestion often results in difficulty finding an auto rickshaw. In these situations, riders often choose between taking a bike ride, where the cost is significantly higher and the wait is long, or, as a last option, walking.
Despite the entire day's exhaustion, a 4 to 5 km walk is manageable, but the persistent staring and unwanted attention from passersby make it incredibly stressful. This includes not only potential threats but also drivers who stay too close and uncles who loom with unsettling intentions. These unscrupulous behaviors further highlight the dire need for heightened security measures in our society.
Concluding Thought: Addressing Societal Concerns
The reality of incidents such as the horrifying case of Lakshmi, a 12th class student who faced robbery in Jalandhar, Punjab, raises serious questions about our current society's protection protocols. In 2021, Lakshmi managed to hold on to a robber, but the experience remains harrowing. Her actions, though admirable, also underscore the vulnerability of individuals and the lack of sufficient measures to protect them.
In conclusion, the growing prevalence of such events necessitates a comprehensive overhaul of our societal and governmental strategies to ensure robust public safety and personal security. We must collectively work towards creating a safer, more secure world for everyone.
