The Story Behind Our Christmas Ornaments: A Journey Through Memories and Love
The Story Behind Our Christmas Ornaments: A Journey Through Memories and Love
Every year as the holiday season approaches, our Christmas decorations become the focal point of our home. My wife, who is 60 years old, has a collection of treasured ornaments, each with its own unique story. One particular set of lights that I recently repaired, bought before my wife was born, has earned me some well-deserved brownie points! Let me share some of the most cherished ornaments in our tree and the stories they hold.
Special Ornaments and Their Meanings
Every ornament in our tree holds a special meaning to us. From pictures of beloved pets to mementos from significant moments, these decorations serve as a reminder of the love and joy that surrounds us during the festive season.
Top Left: Our Departed Dog Freddy
On the top left of my tree, you'll find a picture of my beloved dog Freddy, who passed away two years ago. We still miss him terribly, but this picture reminds us of the wonderful times he brought to our family. Next to him is a letter 'K' standing for Kaede, our 14-year-old mutt, who is still with us and continues to bring joy to our lives.
Right: A Glass Etching of a Rhodesian Ridgeback
To the right is a glass etching of a Rhodesian Ridgeback dog. This is significant because it's the only breed I have ever owned, aside from Kaede, our 14-year-old mutt. Below this etching is a dog with angel wings, representing my first Rhodesian Ridgeback who unfortunately passed away in 2004. Beside this special ornament, there is a generic dog in a scarf, symbolizing the love and care that dogs bring into our lives.
Right: My Wedding and Nutcracker
Over to the right, you can find a bride and groom picture, marking my wedding in 2007. Beside the wedding photo is a nutcracker that we purchased during a trip to Quebec in 2008. This wonderfully imperfect nutcracker, with its tale of Christmas kissing and frogs, brings a smile to my face every time I see it.
Your Musical Keyboards
Next to the nutcracker is a piano, representing my husband's keen talent for playing keyboards. Underneath the piano is a blue angel, a gift from some friends in 2010. To the left of the angel is an enchanting picture of three dogs, named after my three Rhodesian Ridgebacks from the mid-1990s: Sushi, Simba, and HarryBoy, given to me by my sister. To the left of this, we have two goofy souls with crazy hair, also a gift from my sister, which simply says 'SISTERS' on the heart.
Holiday Gifts and Customs
Other ornaments in our collection represent significant moments such as a boat, which reminds us of the year we bought our boat from Savannah, Georgia. Another ornament, a representation of Anne of Green Gables from Prince Edward Island, brings a touch of charm and nostalgia to our tree. Adding a personal touch, I have also kept some chewed-up ornaments made by our beloved pet, Freddy the Rhodesian Ridgeback, who loved the feathers and brought us so much joy.
These ornaments are not just pieces of glass and plastic; they are stories wrapped in tinsel and lights. Each one has a memorable story, a cherished memory, or a special relationship that makes them irreplaceable.
Our Tree and Its Visual Journey
Our tree looks pretty good, and the rest of the ornaments are just as special. Below a brutally attacked Santa ornament, you will find another of Santa playing a musical note to point to my husband's musical talents. To the right of the piano is a dancing frog and a chubby red figure, which, similar to the nutcracker, symbolizes the need to "kiss a lot of frogs" before finding the perfect one.
Overall, our Christmas decorations are a beautiful blend of tradition, family, and love, capturing moments in time that make the holiday season truly special.
Conclusion
Christmas is a time to look back at the year gone by and reflect on the love, joy, and cherished memories that we shared. These ornaments on our tree are not just decorations; they are a journey through our lives, full of happy moments, and memories that are close to our hearts.
