The Rise and Debate of DMK's Popularity in Tamil Nadu

Tamil Nadu, or TN, has long been a battleground of political power where multiple parties vie for dominance. Among these, the Dravida Munnetra Kazhagam (DMK) and All India Anna Dravida Munnetra Kazhagam (AIADMK) stand as two of the most significant players. While AIADMK once held the top position in terms of vote share, the political landscape has changed dramatically over the years.

Political Dynamics in Tamil Nadu

APAIADMK, after a split, has fragmented into multiple factions. These factions have contributed to the rise of DMK as the dominant political force in the region. Even if these factions were to reunite, the potential rivalry with DMK could still be highly competitive. It is also noteworthy that governments often face an anti-incumbency factor, which can potentially help the AIADMK in the future.

DMK, on the other hand, has refocused its efforts on consolidating its political position through various social welfare programs such as free bus rides for women, Urimai Thokai for women empowerment, Tamil Pudhalvan for higher education aid, and schemes to support girls pursuing higher education. Additionally, DMK is actively promoting industrial development, which is contributing to sustained growth in the state's GDP, positioning it as a key player at the national level.

Economic Growth and Corruption

Despite some significant corruption allegations, there is no political party in any capitalist country globally that can claim to be completely free from corruption. India, being a pseudo-capitalist country, cannot achieve total anti-corruption. The current socio-political landscape sees corruption as an essential part of the machinery that includes politics, administration, and judiciary. However, DMK focuses on development and welfare, which is why the majority of TN citizens support them.

Especially in AIADMK, which has a reputation for corruption, citizens seem to accept it as a way of life, as long as their basic needs are met. Thus, people in TN often overlook the corrupt practices of DMK due to its active engagement in developmental initiatives. This mirrors the situation in Gujarat, where the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP), despite being the most corrupt, maintains popularity among people who do not mind paying bribes as long as their work is done.

The "Tirumangalam Formula" and Its Impact

The mention of the so-called "Tirumangalam Formula" by some of AIADMK's leaders denotes their use of tactics to buy votes. This method, characterized by the distribution of ill-gotten money, is not unique to this party. However, it has been a recurring issue in Indian politics where parties often resort to such unethical practices to stay in power. Election results often turn on these last-minute efforts, which makes the situation even more complex.

To conclude, while DMK retains its popularity and has played a significant role in the development of Tamil Nadu, it is essential to acknowledge the challenges it faces, including criticisms of corruption. The political landscape in TN continues to evolve, with both DMK and AIADMK vying for power through various strategies and reforms.
