The Most Important Mistake to Avoid as a Christian: Humility and Truth
As a Christian, there are many aspects to navigate and maintain in our faith journey. Yet, one of the most critical mistakes to avoid is pride. Pride is a pervasive quality that blinds us to our own failings, making it harder to see our true selves and our true relationship with Christ. Pride is not only detrimental to our personal growth but also pervasive in our interactions with others.
It is essential for believers to be mindful of pride because it often manifests in our relationships, thoughts, and actions. While recognizing pride in others may come more easily, recognizing it within ourselves is far more challenging. This is because pride is a deeply ingrained part of our nature, and we often deceive ourselves, attributing our failures to external factors rather than our own shortcomings.
Embracing Humility and Seeking Real Knowledge
Christianity emphasizes a personal and intimate relationship with Christ, not a pattern of religious behavior governed by a set of dos and don’ts. True believers seek to understand the real history and science behind their faith, as staying in ignorance can make them vulnerable to further religious indoctrination. Embracing humility in this sense means recognizing our own limitations and the vastness of knowledge and wisdom beyond our own.
It is crucial to seek out the holy and true word of God as found in the Bible. Christians should receive and reflect on God’s teachings, understand His corrections, and obey His commandments. By doing so, believers can embody the principles that Christ taught and ensure that He is truly living in them.
The World as an Enemy of the Believer
The world is often seen as the most significant adversary to a believer. While evils like the flesh and the devil can be avoided with the help of Christ, the world continues to be a deceptive force. The alluring promise of worldly solutions to life's problems is enticing but ultimately hollow. Money, knowledge, and power might appear to bring fulfillment, but they do not satisfy deep desires. Similarly, consolations about disease, aging, and death may provide temporary relief but lead to a life steeped in sin and victimhood.
The world's promises are fundamentally flawed, causing believers to place their trust in humans rather than in God. As the Bible warns, 'Cursed is the man that trusts in man' (Jeremiah 17:5). True believers must rely on God and not let the allure of the world's deceptive promises lure them away from their path.
Respecting Others Uniquely
For those who are passionate about sharing the gospel, it's important to respect the unique aspects of each person's journey. While evangelism is a fundamental part of Christianity, it's equally essential to recognize that others might not share the same openness to discuss their beliefs. Evangelists should avoid persistently harassing, annoying, or pushing others to convert.
The Bible advises, 'For I am not ashamed of the gospel: for it is the power of God unto salvation to every one that believes; to the Jew first, and also to the Greek' (Romans 1:16). It also teaches, 'Do not be overzealous in making others believe. Let them see the good in you and seek Christ through you' (2 Corinthians 6:13). In both cases, the key is respecting the right of others to believe what they see fit or no faith at all.
By approaching others with humility, truth, and love, Christians can better share their faith in a meaningful and respectful manner without causing unnecessary offense or frustration.
