Southern New Hampshire University: A Critical Examination of Its Academic Rigor and Standards
As a lifelong learner and educational enthusiast, Southern New Hampshire University (SNHU) has held a special place in my heart. I appreciate the friendly and helpful faculty and staff who strive to see all students thrive and succeed. However, in this detailed examination, I will critically analyze the university's offerings and standards, highlighting areas of concern and sharing personal experiences.
Academic Rigor and Distance Education
SNHU is a regionally accredited institution known for its distance learning capabilities. However, my experience suggests that the university may fall short in key areas of academic rigor. Many in the education community, particularly those in the Humanities, view SNHU as a diploma mill. This perspective aligns with internal concerns I had while pursuing a Master's in English.
One major issue I encountered was the asynchronous, lecture-free approach to course delivery. For a program focused on literature and language, this methodology poses significant challenges. Teachers and scholars, including those with extensive experience, often emphasize the importance of engagement and conversation in the literary analysis process. At SNHU, discussions are limited to D2L discussion boards, with infrequent student participation. This limitations to fuller and more dynamic engagement can severely impact learning outcomes.
Standard and Expectations
Another aspect of the program that raised concerns was the expectations and standards for graduate-level work. In my experience, even as an instructor for ENG 550, I observed that some students struggled with the graduate-level material. The assignments provided were often brief, lacking in depth, and completed in series of milestones. The final assignment, while slightly longer, was still not commensurate with the rigorous nature of a graduate-level course. This inconsistency between expectations and delivery can undermine the value of a degree from SNHU.
Admissions Standards and Grade Inflation
Admissions to SNHU are relatively lenient compared to more prestigious institutions, which should be a cause for concern. The lack of required letters of recommendation and absence of a writing sample are red flags, suggesting that the admissions process may prioritize test scores and transcripts over qualitative assessments. The grade inflation at SNHU is also a significant issue, raising questions about the true academic standing of graduates.
Potential for Further Improvement
Given my career in college success coaching and work as a book editor, I am acutely aware of the competitive landscape for higher education. SNHU competes not only with for-profit universities but also with a host of state universities, such as Bowling Green State University in Ohio, the University of Texas system, the University of Missouri system, and Indiana University. These institutions offer robust online graduate programs that emphasize academic rigor and thorough learning experiences.
My recommendation for SNHU is to enhance its academic offerings and standards. This would involve revisiting its course delivery methods, improving the quality and depth of assignments, addressing the issue of grade inflation, and implementing more rigorous admissions processes. Additionally, fostering meaningful engagement and dialogue in the learning environment would be crucial for truly preparing students for academic success at the graduate level.
I remain curious about the future directions of SNHU and its English department, particularly regarding the success of its graduates. However, based on my experiences and the concerns raised by others in the educational community, I believe that SNHU can and should strive to meet the high standards of academic rigor and excellence expected in higher education.
For further discussion and exploration of these issues, please feel free to engage in felt discussions with the SNHU community. I am also eager to hear the institution's response to these points.
