Navigating the Holiday Spirit: A Balancing Act

Would you like to get into the holiday spirit, but find yourself circling the inevitable doom and gloom cloud that lingers over some of your family gatherings this time of year? This year, the holiday spirit feels even more muted for me, surrounded by the shadows of grief and loss.

My Regular Holiday Routine

For most of us, the holiday season is a time to relax, celebrate, and reunite with loved ones. But for me, that is months away, usually around July or August, when I embark on my summer vacations. Towards the end of the year, I start preparing for Christmas, reflecting on the past year and looking forward to the joy that the upcoming season will bring. However, this year feels quite different.

3 Years of Heartache

It has been three years since my niece's husband of 40 passed away, and the holiday seasons without him took a heavy toll on our family. For the first time in three years, I am again facing the holidays without his presence, a reminder of the cherished times we spent together.

2019: A Year Shattered by Loss

Our bad luck began in November 2019 when my niece's husband died at the tragically young age of 40. That act put a significant damper on the upcoming holiday season, casting a shadow that was hard to dispel. The weight of his premature death cast a long-lasting impact on our family dynamics and holiday planning.

2020 and 2021: More Trials

I had hoped that 2020 would bring some relief, but as we all know, it did not. Instead, it brought a different kind of heartache. In 2021, our difficulties persisted as our dear niece fell ill with the pandemic virus. It was especially poignant as she was on the dark day after Christmas; unfortunately, this robbed us of the joy of New Year's Eve celebrations, leaving memories tinged with sadness.

Recovery and Hopes for Better Days

Despite the hardships, our dear niece recovered well as she was fully vaccinated. Looking back, each year has had its share of struggles, but there were glimmers of light. This year, so far, has brought us respite. Our Thanksgiving celebration was a success, filled with warmth and laughter, and it lifted our spirits. I find myself holding on to the hope that Christmas will also bring its usual array of festivities and togetherness.

Never Give Up on the Holiday Spirit

Dealing with the holiday spirit during these times can be challenging, but it is important to remember that even during the darkest of times, there is always a ray of hope. The holiday spirit is not just about joy and celebration, but also a time to honor and cherish the memories we create, even in the wake of loss. It is a testament to our resilience and the strength we find in our families and loved ones.

As you navigate this holiday season, don't let grief or past traumas overshadow the beauty of these special times. The holiday spirit is a powerful force that can bring comfort, and it is our duty to embrace it. Each year may bring its challenges, but the joy and love we share will undoubtedly keep us going.

So, would you like to get into the holiday spirit? As I face the upcoming season, I choose to hold onto hope and optimism, remembering that every shadow has a light at its end.
