Dutch Culture: Perceptions of Boredom and the Unbridled Spirit

The perception of whether Dutch people consider themselves as boring often varies among individuals. While many Dutch people take pride in their straightforwardness, practicality, and no-nonsense attitude, which some outsiders might perceive as boring, they also celebrate their rich culture, vibrant cities, and active social lives. In fact, many Dutch people might humorously refer to their culture with a slight twist:

Perceptions and National Identity

“Not necessarily, but we totally are. Everyone does everything in the same way. That’s how we do things. There is no deviation.”

On the other hand:

“Sometimes one is creative and finds a new way of doing things. But unless that person is super successful with doing that, this person is frowned upon. If successful, however, we collectively call ourselves innovative.”

The Dutch Party Scene and Social Engagement

Recent experiences reflect a glimpse into the unique social dynamics of the Netherlands. After residing in Australia and the UK for a few years, a Dutch individual returned to find that connecting with people has become quite a challenge. Pub culture in the Netherlands is distinctly different from what one might find in other countries. There is no 'speaking to strangers' in Dutch pubs; you accompany the group you arrived with, and you stick with them.

Moreover, engaging in topics that are not on the 'approved list' is frowned upon. The Dutch value directness and practicality, but there is also a culture of keeping personal matters private. Conversations often revolve around seemingly mundane topics like football, the weather, and the best route to a destination, making social interactions more of a formal exchange than an engaging conversation.

Life During the Lockdown

Currently, life in the Netherlands is centered around the house. The recent cuant (lockdown) due to the ongoing pandemic poses a stark contrast to the vibrant social life the Netherlands is known for. Many Dutch people have missed the camaraderie and spontaneity of the past. Here are some of the aspects of Dutch life that they miss:

Conversations in Public Spaces

“I miss the conversations with friends and families in restaurants and cafes. Most Dutch people like to talk about anything: sex, criticism of the government, religion, and they often search for taboos to talk about with a grin on their face.”

The Party Scene

“I miss going out to clubs and bars and festivals. Just to dance and party all night long. The Netherlands is known for its vibrant and extensive party scene, as any tourist visiting Amsterdam or any of the other cities can attest. Just to laugh at yourself when you get swept into a mosh pit is priceless.”

Competitive Sports and Community Spirit

“I miss the competitive sporting! Just not going to the sport club, enjoying some yoga ♀, and weighing some belts. Play some football with friends. Just to feel the energy of scoring a goal, the frustration when things don’t go your way, and the continuous banter. The Dutch sport a lot and even have facilities in the smallest of villages, and we perform outstanding in many sports on an international level.”

Art and Cultural Scenes

“I miss enjoying art. Not just Big Art like Van Gogh and Rembrandt but also the quirky expositions in abandoned factories and churches. I miss the vibe that hangs around the art scene to encounter a new perspective when visiting a new exhibition.”

“I miss going out to museums and entertainment parks. Just to go out for fun with your family and enjoy a ride on a roller coaster, but also to wonder about history, about science, life itself.”

Travel Abroad

“I miss traveling abroad. Normally visit an...”

These experiences highlight the dynamic and engaging nature of Dutch culture, despite the prevailing perceptions of straightforwardness and practicality. The Dutch have a rich social life, vibrant cultural scenes, and a strong community spirit that is often overlooked by outsiders.
