Creative Tactics in Dungeons Dragons: Counterbalancing DM’s Plans
What is the Most Creative/Hilarious Way Someone Has Used a Spell in Dungeons Dragons?
The journey through the unpredictable world of Dungeons Dragons (DD) is filled with unexpected twists and turns. One such instance occurred when our veteran party, consisting of a Human Devotion Paladin, a Half-elf Wild Magic Sorceror, a Half-Orc Drunken Master Monk, and a Gythyanki Life Cleric, decided to assault the current Big Bad Evil Guy's (BBEG) warehouse.
Counterspell Warfare: Unraveling a DM's Plan
Our party was not just a group of adventurers; we were strategists with a knack for outsmarting the Dungeon Master (DM). We faced a formidable challenge: three 11th-level fighters and a BBEG of similar level, all against our group of level 7 or 8 characters, including a Bard who had taken counterspell with magical secrets. We were certain of our victory until the DM introduced a powerful warlock
Just as we were executing our battle plan—sentinel positioning for the monk, archery from the shadows for the druid, and the bard ready to counter any spells—mass suggestion was unleashed. However, the bard's counterspell saved the day. We couldn't believe our luck as he countered greater invisibility and even another spell the DM hadn't even named before the warlock could cast anything else.
A Cavalier Use of Counterspell
The bard's action wasn't just a strategic move; it was a grand laugh. By spamming counterspell, he unraveled the DM’s meticulously laid out plans and revealed his true nemesis. Our understanding of the game dynamics shifted, and the warlock's unexpected introduction became a turning point in our campaign.
Despite not being the most creative solution, this use of counterspell was incredibly effective. It not only led to a good laugh but also significantly changed the direction of our story. The clergy of life sometimes gets a bad rap, but his efficiency in combat and his quick thinking under pressure were memorable.
Unyielding Loyalty and Geas
Our party faced another instance where our cleric's straightforward approach resulted in an impactful moment. During a massive castle siege, our cleric decided to use the Geas spell on the commander of a powerful enemy army. With good perception rolling, our cleric identified the commander and calmly approached him, casting Geas.
Not only did the spell work, but it also transformed the enemy army. They became fiercely loyal to our cleric, obeying any orders given to them by him. This action not only turned the tide of the battle but also set the stage for future encounters. The enemy troops were controlled to be sacrificed for the summoning of a powerful hero, ensuring that they didn't die uselessly.
Lessons Learned and Paths Forward
The success of either of these tactics underscores the importance of adaptability and strategy in DD. Whether it's the Bard's unyielding counterspell or the cleric's calm and calculated use of Geas, these moments highlight the creativity and resourcefulness needed to navigate the ever-changing dynamics of a DD campaign. These instances not only entertained the players but also advanced the plot in profound ways.
These stories remind us that in DD, the most creative moments often arise from unexpected choices and creative uses of the tools available to the players. Whether it's Counterspell or Geas, the key is to embrace the uncertainty and seized opportunities when they present themselves.
