An Unconventional Collector’s Journey: From Funerary Items to Rare Artifacts
I've always had a penchant for collecting, but my collections are far from conventional. From funerary items to rare handmade switches and everything in between, my collection is a unique journey through time and rarity. Let's delve into the eclectic and fascinating world of my collecting journey.
Funerary Items and Unique Collectibles
Funerary items hold a special place in my collection. One such piece is a metal and paper toe tag from the Harlem Valley Insane Asylum. These were used extensively during the experimental work using shock therapy in the early 20th century. With thousands of residents undergoing these experiments, the toe tags were a staple in the process.
Another notable piece is Turquoise from an Arizona mine. Miners would often pick through the waste rock, hiding turquoise they found in their lunchboxes as they left work each day. This rare and unique piece of natural beauty is a testament to the ingenuity of those early-day miners.
Handmade and Vintage Collectibles
Besides funerary items, I also have a vast collection of knives, from handmade switchblades to unique papers and ephemera from the Civil War era. Among the knives, a rare piece stands out: a handmade switchblade by the legendary Renzo Beltrame from the early 1970s. This piece is not only visually striking but also a historical artifact.
From Vintage Dishes to Artistic Expression
I once had a collection of vintage dishes, but my passion for travel led me to sell them to an antique store. While this allowed me to explore the world, it also left a void in my collection. However, instead of filling that void with more traditional collectibles, I now photograph everything I encounter, turning my collection into a trove of images.
Exploring Nature and Random Finds
Nature, with its myriad forms, has always intrigued me. Driftwood, for example, is a unique and beautiful addition to my collection. Each piece is a testament to the natural forces that shape our world.
Soundscapes and Visuals: A Must for the Connoisseur
Music, movies, and TV have always been a significant part of my collecting journey. While the world around me may be constrained by political and economic structures, my heart still yearns for the golden era of music and film. Let's take a look at some of the genres and titles I hold dear.
Music
The realms of electronic and experimental music are where I truly find my passion. Artists like Tangerine Dream, Ashra, Manuel Gottsching, Vangelis, Jean Michel Jarre, and many others create soundscapes that transport me to a different universe. The list is indeed very long, including works by Michael Danna, Tim Clement, Michel Uttebroek, Steve Roach, Ray Lynch, Michael Stearns, Kevin Braheny, Suzanne Ciani, Constance Demby, Tri Atma, John McLaughlan, and the Mahavishnu Orchestra.
Movies
The world of cinema has its own treasures for me. Films like "Night on Earth," "Bagdad Cafe," "Paris Texas," and "Fantastic Planet" are among my favorites. The original 1970s version of "Swallows and Amazons" also holds a special place in my collection of forgotten classics.
TV
The golden age of television is another realm I explore. Shows like "The Twilight Zone," "The Night Gallery," "The Outer Limits," "One Step Beyond," and "Science Fiction Theatre" transport me to a world beyond the mundane. The list extends even further, encompassing all the greats from the 50s, 60s, and 70s.
A World Constrained, but the Heart Unbound
While our current world might seem constrained and filled with challenges, my heart remains unbound. Through my collection and my passion for creating visual records and engaging with music and films, I continue to explore an uncharted world.
